The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – Case for support and brochure

The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – a mirror to our souls, a mirror to the world.

The  Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is breaking new ground by commencing work on a new six story depot building which will open right next to the museum. The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen will be much more than an iconic building that stores wonderful collections. It will create the world’s first and only public Depot that allows uncurated access to an entire collection. Normally less than 10% of a museums collection is on show at any one time.

We were asked to help tell this amazing story and build a case for support that brought to life the unique experience users would have.

First we ran a creative workshop to explore and understand the emotions they wanted people to feel when visiting the Depot but also what drove people to collect. We believed that by understanding why people collect would provide a deeper insight and help express a more profound understanding of the transformative experience people would have when being allowed to access this vast collection.

From the workshop we identified that what we collect reflects us as individuals and when you see multiple collections you see a reflection of society.

“To collect is to be human. In fact, we are all collectors. Whether of books or books, photos or modern art, our collections are vivid, indelible reflections of who we are. To experience a collection as electric as this is to see ourselves refracted through a different and revealing prism – perhaps for the first time.”

So the narrative we developed not only represented the deeper sense of the experience but also the mirror like qualities of the building itself.
